A pair of Jacobean carved oak putti playing musical instruments

Two young, male caryatids standing on tapered and decorated plinths. One plays a wind instrument resembling a shawm, the other, a somewhat awkwardly twisted lute. The carving and color are excellent, reflecting the values of the age. The English dealer from whom we purchased them has mounted them on fabric-lined wooden backs, a convenience we were unwilling to remove, although one could do so easily.
