The three-panel face of this coffer is subtly decorated with shallow rabbets on each of its structural elements and subtle shaping of the upper and lower rails above and beneath each panel. These rabbets have been painted black, perhaps to simulate ebony inlay.

Each side is of single panel construction, and the roughly finished rear is comprised of two panels, separated by an unusually wide center stile. The lid, which appears to be original, was formed from two wide boards, with “breadboard” cleats. The original snipe hinges have been replaced with straps.

English, ca. 1680

Lid: 49 ½” X 22”; Height: 27 ¼”

Price: $550
