Purchased recently at auction, this exceptionally ornate coffer is in excellent condition. The three panels in its face are decorated with floral and geometric carving, while its frieze is carved with a pattern that we associate with the north of England, specifically County Durham. Each of its side-hung drawers is fitted with a bale handle, and the lid matches the construction of the face, but without carving. The back was made in two panels. Remnants of the original snipe hinges remain, but replacement butts now do the work.

With our purchase we received the customer’s original receipt from Fiske and Freeman (2006). The coffer is illustrated in When Oak Was New, by John Fiske (Page 200, illustration #5). This receipt will be passed on to the purchaser.

England or Scotland, ca. 1690

Dimensions: 50 ½” X 23”; Height: 31”
