A traditional antique Korean Bandaji (“half-closing”) blanket chest, with two shallow interior drawers for storing valuables. The face is comprised of a stationary bottom board, secured by five brass fittings on each side. A string of purely decorative brasses lines its bottom, and three elaborate brass hinges connect the top to the stationary bottom, allowing it to swing forward and down to give access to the interior. At the top of this door are two bales and an elaborate, working lock. These chests are typically associated with the Joseon Dynasty; this one dates from the 19th century.
Korean, ca. 1900
