An early boarded oak coffer with painted surface and bold scratch decoration

Purchased at a local auction, this naively decorated coffer is distinguished not only by its painted bone-colored surface, but also by the expansive design of demilunes and flowers that are scratched and punched into its surface. The “legs” of this box were formed by cutting an “M” design into each of the ends. The two-board lid has been reinforced by four cleats underneath it, and two earlier pairs of hinges have been replaced more recently. With few exceptions, this is an “as found” piece.
From the estate of Sam Malin
English, ca. 1620
Lid: 43 ½” X 17 ½”; Height: 24 ¾”
