A compact example of the form, elegantly veneered and of pleasing proportions. The desk has four drawers, each with its original handles, and is supported by four turned ball feet. Inside is an elaborately conceived working space, with five drawers, each with a small brass knob, eight cubbyholes of varying sizes, and a small, once lockable, door in the center.

Amid all of these is a central well, accessed by a sliding lid of solid burl (!) and extending to the front, back, and sides of the desk. The slanting lid swings out on a pair of brass hinges and rests on two lopers that extend at the sides, thereby creating a work surface for the user. (It’s large enough to accommodate an iPad!)

The exterior is beautifully veneered, with banding framing the drawers and slanting lid. The interior is far more elaborate, with line inlay on the drawers and door, despite it being invisible most of the time.

An exceptional example in excellent condition.
