This quite interesting 22k gold Stuart crystal slide, circa 1690, bears the dual cypher of William III and Mary.

This high carat slide contains a compartment with beautifully woven blonde hair laid over a pale blue ground.

Surmounting the hair and centered is the intertwined initials of King William III and Queen Mary in gold wirework.

The compartment is covered by a faceted rock crystal with a flat table and two cuts to the girdle.

The crystal has been bezel set into gold, which has a scalloped edge near the base.

As the slide was easily worn, it was an extremely popular type of jewelry.

The verso of the gold mounting is fitted with two flat loops, or ears, and a ribbon of silk would be threaded through enabling it to be worn around the neck or wrist.

The slide measures 3/4" X 2/3" and is in fine condition.

Stuart crystal jewelry is commemorative of Charles I of England who died in 1649. This type of crystal work was created in England during the 1600’s in wonderful Stuart memento mori pieces. As William III was the son of Mary, daughter of Charles I, he was a Stuart.

English, 17th century.
