This lovely English pendant was created in silver and gold in the form of a Maltese cross.

The cross has been paved with 25, faceted, black-dot diamond paste stones—all closed back set.

The gold verso of the pendant has a hidden, fixed gold bail, which holds an angular silver Belcher-type link chain, measuring 15”; the pendant measures 1” square.

Interest in this design was made popular by Lady Emma Hamilton, Admiral Lord Nelson’s mistress, who collected funding and food for the besieged Maltese during the French invasion in the late 1700’s.

Lady Hamilton often wore the Maltese cross on her neck, at balls and other events, and soon jewels created in this design were in vogue.
