Purchased more than a decade ago from renowned New York collector George Way, this early painting captures this unidentified subject.
Because of his white cowl and his un-bejeweled hands joined in prayer, one assumes that he is a monk or a priest.
The intensity of his facial expression underscores this conclusion, as does the stark black background.
On the verso is a pastoral landscape, perhaps painted by a different hand.
Oil on wood panel.
Probably Continental (Spain?), 17th century
Painting: 9 ¾” X 11 ¾”; Frame: 13” X 15”
