Purchased more than a decade ago from the collection of renowned New York collector George Way, this early painting captures this unidentified subject with his hands clasped in prayer.

Because of his white cowl and his un-bejeweled hands, one assumes that he is a monk or a priest.

The intensity of his facial expression underscores this conclusion, as does the stark black background.

On the verso is a pastoral landscape, perhaps painted by a different hand.

Oil on wood panel.

Probably Continental (Spain?), 17th century

Painting: 9 ¾” X 11 ¾”; Frame: 13” X 15”

Price: $875
