A pair of matted and framed figural carvings

Two scenes carved within a narrow gilt surround and decorated with gilding over a red ground with quatrefoil piercings. Each of the scenes contains an elderly, bearded man and two apparently younger figures. In each scene, one of the younger persons appears to be engaged in an activity – perhaps music making.

We believe that the carvings are Chinese. Although each might have been created as individual bits of folk art, it seems equally possible that they may have been part of the carved frieze of a lavishly decorated chinoiserie bed, harvested and framed individually.
