A pair of matted and framed figural carvings

Two scenes carved within a narrow gilt surround and decorated with gilding over a red ground with quatrefoil piercings. Each of the scenes features a group of three persons, the tallest in the center, attended by the two smaller figures. Both scenes contain leafy foliage, with piercings at the rear of each.

We believe that the carvings are Chinese. Although each might have been created as an individual bit of folk art, it seems equally possible that they may have been part of the carved frieze of a lavishly decorated chinoiserie bed, harvested and framed individually.

Chinese, late 19th century or earlier, with later frame and brass finding
