A matted and framed figural carving in an architectural setting

The carved scene is mounted in a narrow gilt surround and decorated with gilding over a red ground with quatrefoil piercings. The scene contains five human figures, with the tallest in the center. The layout of the scene might suggest that he is the teacher, attended by four students.

We believe that the carving is Chinese. Although it may be an individual bit of folk art, it seems equally possible that it was once part of the carved frieze of a lavishly decorated chinoiserie bed, harvested and framed individually.
