A well-executed edition of the emblem of the famous barrister and Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain from 1737 until 1756. Beneath the lion and stag hangs the motto “Nec cupias nec metuas” (Neither desire nor fear).
The coat of arms is a modern facsimile that came to us matted and framed. There is currently a similar piece being offered on Etsy, unmatted and in a lesser frame. The seller’s Etsy images include the printer’s information at the bottom of the page, invisible under the mat on ours, but showing that the print was produced by the Bernard Picture Company in New York.
This example was framed by Clifford Art Studio, also in New York.
New York, mid-20th century
Dimensions: Sight, including mat: 13 ½” X 20 ¼”; Overall: 16 ½” X 24”
Price: $95
