A man looks up pensively from the paper from which he is reading by candlelight and stares at the viewer in this oil painting. The style strongly suggests the work of Rembrandt or a follower. The painting has been relined and mounted on 19th century stretchers.

The painting was given to the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum by the estate of Newcomb Cleveland in 1952. It was de-accessioned by the museum in 2024.
