The bi is a disc formed of mutton jade and found first in the Neolithic period (3400 – 2250 B.C.). These early examples are extremely rare, but the discs have continued to be made in China until more recent times. Bi discs are associated with heaven, as opposed to cong (earth), and are often found in burial sites, apparently having been buried with the dead.
The date of this disc is uncertain, but we believe it to have been made within the past three centuries. The wooden stand is modern.
Diameter: 4 ¾”; Height of stand: 7 ¾”
