An early wrought iron candle snuffer

Candle snuffers were meant to trim the wick of a burning candle to reduce its smokiness. The spent bit of wick is captured in the semicircular chamber. “Snuffing out” is the accidental extinguishing of the candle during this process.
This snuffer is of simple design and fine detail. Its two parts are joined with a single pin, and thumb and a finger operate it.
Probably American, late 18th century
