Excavation of the hole for the barn and shop began on September 9, 2005.

The site we chose for this pair of buildings was at the highest point on the property. It seemed inevitable that we would find ledge under the soil, and find ledge we did. Our cellar hole still contains a huge mass of stone, providing a solid footing for the two buildings.

Pouring the foundation began on October 4, 2005 and took three days. First, footings were laid out and poured.

Where necessary, the footing was pinned to the stone with re-bar, set into the ledge.
