The Art of Virginia Strom Precourt

Growth Dynamics: Mergers and Acquisitions

c. 1980

Multi-dimensional aluminum-leafed Masonite on Baltic birch

60” x 72”

Even her family and close friends couldn’t answer a fundamental question about “Growth Dynamics”: Where was Virginia Strom Precourt heading with this work? Perhaps it was a pragmatic anticipation of aging. As she turned 65, her eyesight wasn’t getting any better. If she could no longer rely on the fine hand that had driven her art, perhaps she wanted to experiment with a different kind of scale. Every bit as likely was the restlessness that drives all artists. After decades of moving in one direction, she decided to break out of her routine and move away from the tight discipline of drawing. So she stretched… sometimes in puzzling, but always in dynamic, directions.
