In 2002, Virginia Strom Precourt’s youngest son and his wife moved to Ashfield, Massachusetts, a village of 1,700 people in the foothills of the Berkshires. Virginia’s universe took on a new dimension as she marveled at the sight of 100-year-old barns reaching five stories from the farmland below. But more than the architecture, it was the autumn light and sharply defined shadows that made the hills glow.
