Chapter 4: A Structure Begins to Take Shape -- Fall and Winter 2005 - 2006 -- p. 1.

The joists were all in place by January 2, when we covered the entire deck with exterior grade plywood, protected by a large blue tarp. In subsequent months we've referred to this as "our swimming pool."

Our spare time in January was devoted to finishing the framing of the barn, beginning with the heavy wooden girders that carry the second floor and the four large posts that support them.

Next came the joists, which rest on the girders. To these the upper floor will be attached.
